Burned Ballots

Anchor Lead: Nigeria is in it’s election season again and many are hoping to vote for a good leader to lead the country in peace. Except, peaceful voting has never occurred in Nigeria’s history and it  didn’t happen this year…

(VO):Hundreds of Nigerians stood in line to vote but at certain locations in Lagos State, the voting was disrupted and many had to run for their lives.

(VO):A group of armed people rode in on motorcycles and tricycles and opened fire at the voting units. Many ran for their lives and were enraged at the destruction of their votes.

(VO): I sat down with University of Iowa students, Eleanor kemgir and Chukwuebuka ogwo. Who are Nigerian citizens, to talk about Nigeria’s election.

(Kemgir VO/SOT): I definitely believe the election was rigged. I mean that were ballots burned.

(Ogwo VO/SOT): I think the just concluded Nigerian election was a sham.

STANDUP: Nigeria’s president elect, Muhammudu Buhari, has been president for the last four years. He ran against Atiku, who was vice president from 1999 to 2004. Buhari is going to be in office for another four.

(VO): Kemgir isnt very happy that Buhari will be president for another four years.

(Kemgir VO/SOT):The president that has called Nigeria’s youth lazy and useless, but there are no jobs for them to do.

(VO): And for Ogwo, Nigeria’s future is looking very bright.

(Ogwo VO/SOT): He is riddled with corruption. He surrounds himself was a lot of corrupt people. He is an epitome of incompetence.
